Tori Cole (Counselor at DIY Camp) Democracy & Idealism Youth Summer Camp II "We are always getting ready to live, but never living." Ralph Waldo Emerson August 1- August 8, 1999 O' Leno State Park - High Springs, Florida You and other participants from around Florida and the nation will have a fun and empowering week learning how to do projects that will help you make a difference in the world. You will learn how to start a successful Food Not Bombs! group, empowering Theater of Liberation drama events and engage in various projects creating alternative cultures in your hometown. You won't just talk about these things you will learn by doing them. Members of the international network of Food Not Bombs! groups try to help hungry people and attack homelessness in communities by publicly serving free food which has been collected from grocery stores, gardens, and restaurants who would otherwise throw it away. Theater of Liberation is a radical theater form in which there is no audience, everyone is an active participant in solving community and social problems. Using Theater of Liberation helps us become critical thinkers, problem solvers, and activists. Another primary focus is culture jamming which counters the current culture where profits are placed over people. We will invite you to create your own media, make your own zines, and explore art that appeals to your ideals... CREATE YOUR OWN CULTURE, placing people above profits. Who is Organizing the Camp? The camp is being organized primarily by organizers from Orlando Food Not Bombs and the Third Place youth-run youth center. We organized a successful youth summer camp last year and three multi-day youth conferences with over 100 participants. Organizers include high school students, college students, and a teacher.
